NEW BEDFORD, MASS (WPRI) — A New Bedford police officer has been released from the hospital after being shot Friday night on Davis Street around 11pm.
According to a statement released by the New Bedford Police Department, members of the Organized Crime division were executing a search of an apartment. When the officers attempting to breach the door, shots were fired from the inside and an officer was struck. A standoff ensued, and a short while later the persons inside the apartment surrendered.
Five people were arrested, and two have been charged. Nathan Manuel-Jackson is charged with armed assault with intent to murder and unlawful carrying of a firearm. And Thomas Scott has been charged as an accessory as well as unlawfully carrying a firearm. The three other persons were issued subpoenas.
Police Chief David Provencher said the officer was in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital, but is expected to recover.
