PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — When first called to the scene of Chalkstone and River Avenues early Friday morning, police say they saw glass and blood on a sidewalk, but couldn’t find the victim.
They were dispatched to that area at 1 a.m. for reports of shots fired. However, a short time later officers were called to Roger Williams Hospital, where doctors were treating a male gunshot victim.
The victim, who police identified as Derreck Almanzar, 24, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police said the incident is the city’s second homicide of 2014.
The city’s first homicide victim of the year, 24-year-old Nelson Sanchez of Providence, was shot to death in a car last week by someone in another car. No arrests have been announced.
