UXBRIDGE, Mass. (WPRI) – A Massachusetts woman and her pet dog managed to escape from a massive house fire on Tuesday night, but officials estimate the blaze caused at least $100,000 worth of damage.
The Uxbridge Fire Dept. responded to West Hartford Avenue around 10:37 p.m. Tuesday to find a two-story single-family home fully engulfed in flames. One of the home’s occupants found and reported the fire. She and her dog escaped, but the occupant suffered some injuries and was transported to UMass Hospital in Worcester.
The department said its crews were able to contain the bulk of the fire quickly, but firefighters had to spend more than an hour digging fire out of the home’s walls and attic. The blaze was deemed fully under control at 11:54 p.m.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and related to smoking.
The Uxbridge Fire Department was assisted by crews from Northbridge, Douglas, Millville, Hopedale, Sutton, Upton, Nasonville, North Smithfield, Harrisville and Pascoag.
