Ex-Mayor Moreau gets hearing in effort to be freed

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A federal judge has scheduled a hearing for an imprisoned Central Falls ex-mayor who’s trying to be freed early and have his corruption conviction vacated.

U.S. District Judge John McConnell on Friday set a hearing for Feb. 28 on a motion to vacate former Central Falls Mayor Charles Moreau’s conviction.

Moreau is about halfway through a two-year prison sentence after pleading guilty in 2012 to corruptly accepting a gratuity. His lawyer filed the motion on Thursday. He cited an appeals court ruling in an unrelated case that found the charge is not a crime.

Moreau has acknowledged he accepted a furnace and home renovations from a city contractor.

Moreau is being held at the Plymouth County Correctional Facility in Massachusetts. U.S. Marshal Jamie Hainsworth says he was brought there Monday for undisclosed security reasons.
