Police Crime Scene Tape

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (WPRI) — A 49-year-old Rhode Island man died Saturday afternoon while paragliding off the coast of Plum Island.

The man, whose name has not been released, crashed about 50 yards offshore just before 5:00 p.m. According to eyewitnesses, he was face down in the water for about twenty minutes while rescue crews tried to reach him. Eventually, a Coast Guard ship was able to recover and perform CPR on the man, who was immediately transported to Anna Jaques Hospital and pronounced dead.

Newburyport Police say the man was with two friends, who tried to reach him but were unable to. Both of those men were treated for exposure after swimming in 38-degree water. The medical examiner has taken over the investigation, but police believe the man experienced some sort of mechanical issue during takeoff.
