Woman dies in Scituate fire

SCITUATE, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after a fire in Scituate destroyed a home and claimed the life of a woman inside.

North Scituate Fire Chief Adam Hebert told us volunteer firefighters arrived on Silk Lane at about 1 a.m. to find the single-family residence fully engulfed in flames.

One woman became trapped on the first floor and was not able to make it out, according to Hebert.

The rest of the family escaped to safety.

Herbert said took firefighters more than an hour to knock down the flames, but not before the home was destroyed. He also said the bitter temperatures made the fight much more challenging for crews on scene.

“Just with the extreme cold, there was a lot of heat so we’re trying to keep crews warm and fresh,” said Hebert.

He also added that one firefighter was hospitalized with minor injuries, but he’s expected to be fine.

The victim has yet to be identified, but a friend of the family said she was a woman in her sixties.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
