WESTPORT, Mass. (WPRI) — Officials are searching for the cause of a late-night fire in Westport that had crews from several area departments battling flames.
Firefighters responded to American Legion Highway just after 10 p.m. Sunday to find the two-story home fully engulfed.
Police had the road blocked off while crews from Tiverton, Little Compton, Dartmouth, and Fall River were called in to assist.
Officials said the lack of hydrants in the area and the location of the home made fighting the fire difficult, along with the frigid temperatures.
It took crews about an hour to knock down the fire, but not before the home was completely destroyed. They remained on the scene until about 3 a.m. Monday.
The home was vacant at the time, but officials have since gotten in contact with the owner.
No firefighters were injured.
