DEM: Ice safety can’t be tested by sight

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Frigid temperatures and wintery weather has many families hitting the ice for winter activities. The ice may seem safe, but the Department of Environmental Management has not confirmed that ponds are safe for skating.

Many students are on school vacation this week, which is expected to bring a rise in activities on the ice.

Rhode Island DEM officials say you can’t tell the strength of the ice by simply looking at it, the daily temperature, or whether the ice is covered with snow.

Officials believe ice should be a minimum of at least six inches and you should never skate alone.

If you witness a person fall through the ice rescue crews ask that you don’t try to rescue them and immediately call 911.
