Brown Univ. professors gets Sloan Fellowships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Two professors at Brown University have been awarded Sloan Fellowships for their research in chemistry and computer science.

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation announced that Wesley Bernskoetter and Paul Valiant are among the 126 researchers selected this year from the U.S. and Canada. Each will receive $50,000 from the foundation to further their research.

Bernskoetter’s lab is working to develop catalysts that use cheap renewable carbon sources to make chemicals normally made using petroleum.

Valiant studies how computing tools can address fundamental problems in other sciences, including biology and physics and develops algorithms that help scientists better use their data.
