Fire destroys Portsmouth home

PORTSMOUTH, R.I (WPRI) — Firefighters battled wind and flames while trying to save a house on Common Fence Point Saturday afternoon.

Flames broke out in a home at the intersection of Sakonnet Drive and Summit Road around 3:30 pm. The heavy wind not only threatened to spread the fire to nearby homes, it caused the flames to rapidly grow, making the house unstable.

Some neighbors were evacuated, but no injuries were reported. The family was able to quickly escape, but their pets have still not been accounted for. National Grid was called to take power out in the area while crews were at work.

Hours later, a backhoe was brought in to demolish the rest of the house.

Right now, fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
