PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — More than half of Latino households in Rhode Island are “housing-cost burdened” — meaning they spend as much as half of their income on housing or renting costs. That’s according to statistics from the Latino Policy Institute at Roger Williams University and HousingWorks RI, released Thursday.
Three-fourths of Latino households in Rhode Island rent, compared to 40-percent of households statewide. More than half of the renters spend more than 30-percent of their income on housing, and a third of the renters spend more than 50-percent of their income on housing.

“The annual savings generated by alleviating housing cost burdens would allow more Latinos to pursue such dreams as homeownership and higher education,” said the HousingWorks RI interim Executive Director Nicole Lagace in a news release Thursday.
The median Latino household income in Rhode Island is $30,329. The analysis by HousingWorks RI focused on cost-burdened Latino renter households who have an income of $39,000 or less every year.
