PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WPRI) – Residents living in and around Common Fence Point got together Saturday for a walk to raise money for a family whose home was destroyed by fire last weekend.

The “Lap of Love” benefitted the Sweeney family, who lost everything in the fire last Saturday. The Portsmouth Fire Department agreed to be a collection point for donations, and neighbors organized the walk to raise money and other donations.

“I think every one of us is thinking that it could have been us,” said benefit organizer Caroline Dooley.

“Today’s event really was to show them that everybody in the community is thinking about them and we all really care about them,” she said.

Tabitha Cooney also helped organize the event and said the neighborhood is very tightly-knit.

Several hundred dollars has already been raised, and more information on how donations are being accepted is available on the Common Fence Point Facebook page.
