Reed optimistic over Unemployment Insurance

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Democratic Senator Jack Reed continued his efforts Friday to extend benefits for the long term unemployed.

The Rhode Island senator is confident that he and other Democratic legislators will be able to break the Republican filibuster on Unemployment Insurance.

“The good news is that we’re picking up support, the last effort we proposed received the backing of 59 Senators including 4 of my republican colleagues,” said Reed “We’re still working with them, we have to get to 60 but I believe we’re working towards that and I hope we can do that.”

If congress does not pass a measure on long term unemployment insurance, it is estimated 22,000 Rhode Islanders  would be cut off from benefits and 1,200 jobs would be lost in the state.
