Hundreds plunge into icy waters; raise money for Special Olympics

With Mike, Tony, Yianni, and many more

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Hundreds of brave souls, including some familiar WPRI faces, took a plunge into frigid waters raising money to benefit Special Olympics Rhode Island.

The 7th Annual Torch Plunge was held Sunday afternoon at Goddard Park. Numerous police departments participated in the event, including Cranston, North Providence, Portsmouth, Warwick, West Warwick, East Providence, Rhode Island State Police, Smithfield, K9 Search & Rescue, URI Campus Police, and the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy.

Our very own Mike Montecalvo, Tony Petrarca, Yianni Kourakis, and “The Rhode Show’s” Brendan Kirby were also seen getting their feet wet.

Along with two additional plunges Saturday, at least $75,000 has already been raised. The final amount will be released tomorrow.

WPRI is a proud sponsor of the Torch Plunge and the Special Olympics.
