BURRILLVILLE, R.I. (WPRI) – More than 250 first responders, police officers and firefighters will caravan into Rhode Island on Thursday to celebrate a sick little boy’s seventh birthday, but not many of them had to travel farther than Sgt. Jamey Kidd.
Sgt. Kidd is a state trooper all the way from the Kentucky State Police Dept. He said he heard about Burrillville resident Tyler Seddon’s struggle with leukemia and felt a personal need to contribute to his birthday party.
“When I first read the story, it was a no-brainer for me,” Kidd told Eyewitness News. “Seeing what he wanted and having a little boy his same age… I decided to go and see him.”

Kidd was referring to Seddon’s birthday wish of spending time with his personal heroes: law enforcement officers. Tyler’s wish went viral after his mother, Rachel Seddon-Hunt, used social media to request birthday cards from any first responder who wanted to participate. Since that first Facebook post, Tyler’s birthday celebration has grown bigger than Rachel said she could have imagined.
Kentucky’s Sgt. Kidd is just one of hundreds of law enforcement officers involved in an elaborate plan to surprise Tyler on Thursday afternoon. The officers will line up in their official vehicles and escort Tyler to Wright’s Farm Restaurant, where they will host a celebration.
Tyler’s story has gained national attention, rising to fame as a heartwarming story that showcases the selflessness of some of the participating officers. But, local officials say, the officers aren’t the heroes in the story.
“He looks at us as heroes, but we look at him as a bigger hero to us,” said Inspector Craig Sroka,”That’s what it’s all about. It’s about this one kid and making it the most special birthday he’s ever had.”
Tyler’s celebration will begin Thursday morning at the Burrillville Police Department.
