SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) – Students at Smithfield High School paid tribute to local police and emergency crews for keeping them safe during a security scare last week.
The students presented members of the Smithfield Police Department with a 5-foot banner that was signed by the student body.
The school was placed on lockdown last Tuesday afternoon after school officials reported an unidentified person in the building. Smithfield officers quickly responded and completed a room-by-room search of the school. After about 90 minutes, officers deemed the building safe and determined a student had left and re-entered through a side door, which set off the door alarms.
A group of students from the social studies department created the banner, then helped fill it with signatures during the school lunch blocks.
Multiple officers attended the ceremony at Smithfield High School to receive the token of appreciation.
