Would-be store robber chased away with knife

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — A Fall River man is charged with assaulting and trying to rob a convenience store clerk back on Tuesday night.

It happened just before 8 p.m., at Jarek’s Market on Fifth Street. According to a police report, officers believe Joshua Goncalo, 26, jumped over the counter, demanded money and started punching the clerk.

The clerk managed to grab a knife, swinging it at the suspect and chasing him out of the store.

An officer who looked at the store’s surveillance video recognized the would-be robber.

Other officers in the area found Goncalo walking on South Main Street and brought him to the market, where the clerk identified him as the assailant.

After an arraignment Thursday morning, he was held on $3,000 cash bail.
