PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – After taking home their first Big East title in 20 years, madness has only just begun in Providence for the Friars. They’ve secured the number 11 seed in the East bracket and will take on the North Carolina in first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Friday night at 7:20 pm on TNT.
Saturday night, the Friars stopped the Doug McDermott-led Creighton Bluejays 65-58, giving them an automatic tournament bid. It’s their first appearance in the tournament since 2004.
Players and fans waited anxiously at Alumni Hall Sunday night as they watched the Selection Sunday show. Of all 68 tournament teams, Providence was the final school to be seeded. They’ll take on the Tar Heels in San Antonio on Friday.

Roy Williams’ Tar Heels will certainly not be an easy opponent for Ed Cooley’s Friars. Since taking over in 2003, Williams has led his Tar Heels the NCAA tournament every year except 2010. In that span, the historic program has appeared in six Elite Eight’s, three Final Four’s, and taken home two Championships: 2005 and 2009. Williams has produced a number of NBA players, notably Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson, and Harrison Barnes.
