RIC professor dies after being struck by vehicle in NY

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A Rhode Island College professor has died after being struck and killed by a pickup truck while walking in Syracuse, New York.

43 year-old Jennifer Cook, an associate professor of English at RIC, was walking with her mother when they were struck by a pickup truck being driven by an 86 year-old Chittenango man.

Cook died at a local hospital, and her mother remains there being treated for her injuries. The crash is still being investigated but according to the driver has not yet been charged, according to the Syracuse Post-Standard.

A spokeswoman for Rhode Island College said Cook had been with the school for ten years and that her death is “a huge loss” to the campus community. She described Cook as being very active in the community and well-loved by students and faculty.

Flags at the RIC campus will be lowered to half-staff on Monday in her honor.
