Fire destroys units at elderly housing complex

NORTON, Mass. (WPRI) — Several people are out of a home Tuesday after a late-night fire at an elderly housing complex in Norton.

The flames broke out Monday night at Woodland Meadows Apartments on West Main Street in Norton, near North Attleboro.

Fire officials said at least three of the ten units sustained damage, leaving the building partially uninhabitable.

At least one tenant told firefighters she heard an explosion.

“Fire Captain Fuller arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the second floor gable end and reports that there was an explosion on the second floor,” said Norton Fire Chief Paul Schleicher. “We’ll be investigating it and trying to get these people back to normalcy as quick as we can.”

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
