Man dies following truck fire in Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — A man seriously injured in a late-night truck fire in Newport has died, Lt. William Fitzgerald of the Newport Police Department confirms.

According to police, the 33-year-old man was homeless and was trying to stay warm inside of the truck. Officials said the fire started accidentally but it is still unclear how.

Nearby residents alerted the fire department after seeing smoke at the Andrews Express & Storage Warehouse on Fir Street at about 11:30 p.m.

Deputy Fire Chief Brian Dugan said the man’s vital signs were very low when they found him. He was rushed to Newport Hospital, where he later died.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire in about 30 minutes, before it spread to the nearby building.
