NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) – Lawmakers are considering a bill that would install a barrier on the Pell Bridge, separating traffic heading in opposite directions.

Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed and State Representative Deborah Ruggiero have introduced the legislation they say would save lives.

The bill calls for barriers to be completed by March 2015 and for police to strictly enforce the bridge’s 40 mph speed limit.

Three people have been killed in accidents on the Pell Bridge over the past two years.
