Police chase leads to pair of arrests

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police have two people in custody following a chase and eventual traffic stop on an East Providence highway.

At least nine cruisers from the East Providence and Barrington Police Departments surrounded the car near Exit 6 on I-195 West just before 10 a.m. Monday.

Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said it was the result of a alleged shoplifting incident at the Shaw’s in his town. Police were told a case of Red Bull was stolen from the store and officers pulled over the suspect on Rt. 114 North, but the driver then sped off according to LaCross.

East Providence Police were contacted and they were able to slow traffic on 195, allowing them to box in the suspect vehicle.

LaCross told us they had arrest warrants out for the driver, but didn’t elaborate on the charges involved. As for Monday morning’s incident, the driver will face a series of charges including eluding a police officer and speeding.

A passenger was also arrested at the scene, but it’s not yet clear if that person will be charged with anything.

Officers had the scene clear by 10:15 a.m.
