Some cheese spreads recalled over listeria risk

(WPRI) – Oscar’s Smokehouse is recalling some of its cheese spread products that may be contaminated with listeria.

The recall includes the following products with 3-didgit lot numbers from 719-959 or that was purchased since March 21, 2013.

  • Jalapeno Pepper Cheddar Spread, Net Wt. 7 oz.
  • Cheddar Spread & Blue Cheese, Net Wt. 7 oz.
  • Champagne Cheddar Spread, Net Wt. 7 oz.
  • Garlic Cheddar Spread, Net Wt. 7 oz.
  • Port Wine Cheddar Spread, Net Wt. 7 oz.
  • Tangy Horseradish Cheddar Spread, Net Wt. 7 oz.
  • Plain Cheddar Spread, Net Wt. 7 oz.
  • ‘More Than’ Cheddar Spread, Net Wt. 7 oz.
  • Hickory Smoked Cheddar Spread, Net Wt. 7 oz.
  • Bacon & Horseradish Cheddar Spread, Net Wt. 7 oz.
  • Bacon Cheddar Spread, Net Wt. 7 oz.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause foodborne illness in a person who eats a food item contaminated with it. Symptoms of infection may include fever, muscle aches, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea.

These products have only been purchased in Rhode Island through the company’s mail order system.  It was not sold in local stores.

No illnesses have been reported in association with the recall.
