Passenger dead after New Bedford car crash

NEW BEDFORD, MASS. (WPRI) – Police say one person died and another was seriously injured in a crash late Friday night in New Bedford.

Police report that one of their officers was at the intersection of Potomska Street and Route 18 at about 11:30 p.m.when he saw a car heading south on Route 18 going an estimated 80-100mph. The officer lost sight of the car as soon as it passed him.

A passerby said the car, a black Jaguar SE, had gone south on Brock Avenue and the officer headed that way, but a 911 call received shortly after that indicated that the Jaguar had actually crashed at the corner of Warren Street and West Rodney French Boulevard.

The car hit a tree on the east side of the street, knocking it down, and the two occupants had to be freed from the wreck by the fire department. The passenger, 28 year-old Winnitue Montrond of New Bedford, was pronounced dead at the hospital while the driver, 30 year-old Luismiguel Fernandes of Dorchester, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.

Police say the wreck is still under investigation by the accident reconstruction unit.
