Victim rushed to hospital after gunshot wound

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Eyewitness News spoke with a local woman who helped an officer bring aid to a shooting victim Saturday afternoon.

Police responded to the shooting around 2:00 p.m. in front of 15 Beetle St. An officer on scene told Eyewitness News there was only one victim, and two individuals were taken in for questioning.

Kathy Brightman is a member of the Portuguese-American Social Club, whose building is just yards away, and says the victim ended up near the club’s front door.

“I was coming around the corner and saw the officer working on somebody”, said Kathy. She knew the officer, who asked for her assistance. ” ‘Can you help me? The gloves are in the bag. Just open up gauze as fast as you can.’ This officer was working profusely on this guy, just trying to save this guy’s life. He was bleeding out pretty bad. He had a wound right above his groin.”

Officials were seen photographing and processing what appeared to be a shell casing right in front of 15’s door.

The victim was reportedly transported to New Bedford Hospital. That man’s condition is unknown at this time.
