NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — One person was struck and killed by a truck on Route 146 early Wednesday afternoon, state police confirm.
According to Captain Robert Wall, the driver pulled over on the highway and walked into the right travel lane when he was struck by a tractor trailer. The 28-year-old victim was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The incident happened on Route 146 South between Charles Street and Mineral Spring Avenue near the Providence-North Providence line.
Both state police and officials from North Providence arrived on scene just after 1:22 p.m., and remained near the crash scene for over one hour as they continued to investigate.
At this time, no charges have been filed against the driver of the tractor trailer.
“It’s an unfortunate incident, but he had no time to react,” said Wall, “He was very shaken up at the scene after striking the pedestrian.”
The right lane of the highway was temporarily shut down early Wednesday afternoon.
