LINCOLN, R.I. (WPRI) – An 89-year-old woman was killed and one man was transported to the hospital Wednesday evening following a wrong-way crash on Route 146.
Lincoln fire officials used the Jaws of Life to remove the female driver from a badly-damaged sedan.
Rescue crews attempted CPR on the victim, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
At least two other vehicles were seriously damaged in the crash.
The crash shut down part of Route 146 South for about two hours. Traffic was temporarily re-routed to Route 116.
The second victim is in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital.
The crash was the second fatal accident to take place on the highway on Wednesday. Around 1:20 p.m., a 28-year-old man was struck and killed by a tractor trailer while walking in the right travel lane near his car that was pulled over in the breakdown lane.
