PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A well-known figure in Southern New England is continuing to tell his story of addiction and recovery.
Fall River native and former NBA player Chris Herren, has spent the last few years speaking to young people about what he went through while abusing drugs. And Herren knows Rhode Island is in the middle of an overdose epidemic.
“Rhode Island’s been hit hard. And heroin has become a hot topic in this state as well as states all over the country,” he said.
Herren’s message couldn’t come at a more crucial time. The Rhode Island Department of Health has just confirmed there have been 72 overdose deaths in the state so far this year.
Herren’s talk was sponsored by the Rhode Island College Office of Student Activities and was free and open to the public Wednesday night.
