WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) – The former owner of a local day care center was sentenced to 45 years behind bars just more than two months after he was convicted on three counts of child molestation.
David Lyons, 68, was arrested in 2011 after a child told her mother that Lyons molested her. According to the court, investigators found evidence that Lyons sexually abused the accusing child, as well as two other children.
Lyons, a grandfather of four, denied all charges, but he was found guilty on all three counts at the end of January.
Family members of the young victims were emotional at Friday’s sentencing, and said Lyons stole their children’s innocence and that they no longer have that child-like light in their eyes. Lyons’ defense attorney asked the judge to consider his clients age, poor health, and service to his country as a veteran.
The daycare, which was located in Coventry and owned and operated by Lyons and his wife, was closed after the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families opened an investigation.
