BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) – One man was seriously hurt after a so-called freak accident in Bristol Thursday.

According to police, a man was doing maintenance on his drag racing car on Thursday afternoon on Peter Road, when the car took off and slammed into a smoke shed of Wing-N-It, a nearby barbecue restaurant.

Steven Elmslie, 51, was found lying inside the car unconscious. At last check, he was in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

His friends say everyone is hoping for a quick recovery.

“This is a very shocking thing, you know, you never think it’s going to happen to you or your friends,” said Albert Reeves, “Nobody wants to see this happen.”

Rhode Island State Police and Bristol Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

A previous version of this story misstated Mr. Elmslie’s last name.
