New hearing set for suspected serial arsonist

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) – Another competency hearing is scheduled to be held Friday involving a Fall River man accused of intentionally setting fire to four different local mills.

Donald Combs was arrested back in 2010 in connection with fires set at the following mills:

  • Cardi’s Mill on Quequechan Street
  • The Tower Mill Outlet on Quarry Street
  • Wampanoag Mill on Alden Street
  • Flint Mills on Alden Street

The four fires were set over the span of two days in April 2010.

He was indicted by a grand jury in June 2010 and sent to Bridgewater State Hospital to undergo a 20-day psychiatric evaluation.

Combs was previously determined to be mentally ill, but the court deemed him competent to stand trial. A new competency hearing is scheduled for sometime on Friday.

Combs is also facing a second-degree arson charge in Rhode Island for allegedly setting fire to the Bourne Mill complex in Tiverton in September 2009.
