NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway in New Bedford after the body of a newborn baby was discovered Friday night.
Police and medical personnel were called to a three-story home on County Street around 6:30 p.m. by a resident who found the deceased infant outside the home.
The Bristol County District Attorney’s office announced Saturday that the infant is a Caucasian female weighing approximately six pounds.
Police are canvassing the area around where the baby was found in an effort to track down the baby’s mother, who authorities believe may need medical attention.
The scene was approximately four miles from St. Luke’s Hospital and only about a mile from Fire District #2, both of which act as safe havens under Massachusetts State Law. New Bedford District Fire Chief James Clark told us first responders aren’t looking to hear the circumstances or to counsel, they’re just looking to save lives.
“If the child is seven days or younger, she can, without facing criminal prosecution, come here to the fire station, drop off her child,” he said. “We would ask her her name, her child’s name, the Department of Children and Families would want to have that information, but a parent doing that would be under no obligation to provide us with any information.”
It’s not yet clear if the infant was deceased before or after she was left outside the County Street home. An autopsy is scheduled for this weekend.
Anyone with information is urged to call New Bedford Police at (508) 991-6300 or leave an anonymous tip at (508) 961-4584.
