NEW YORK (AP) — David Letterman is pleased with his replacement. He says Stephen Colbert has always been “a real friend” to him. He says he’s “flattered” that CBS chose him, though he thinks they just “wanted another guy with glasses.”

Colbert’s former colleague on “The Daily Show” tells New York magazine that Colbert is “a uniquely talented individual.” Jon Stewart says Colbert has “gears he hasn’t even shown people yet.”

Jimmy Fallon welcomed the competition. He tweeted Colbert to congratulate him on his new first name: Jimmy. Not everyone is happy, of course.

Rush Limbaugh says by choosing Colbert CBS “has just declared war on the heartland of America.” He also mispronounced Colbert’s name, calling him KOHL’-buhrt.

Meanwhile, fans of “The Colbert Report” don’t know what they’re in for when Steve Colbert hosts “Late Show.” Colbert has been playing a character all these years and doesn’t intend to bring the character with him. Few people know what he’s like in real life. Colbert once told AP Radio that he sometimes doesn’t know who he’s supposed to be when shows up at events: himself, or the ultra-conservative he plays on TV. He won’t have that problem much longer.
