COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) – A local woman accused of being drunk when she was involved in a fatal car accident pleaded not guilty to charges Monday afternoon.
Amanda Lyons, of Coventry, is charged with driving under the influence death resulting; driving to endanger, death resulting; and three counts of controlled substance possession.
Police say Lyons was driving drunk on on November 23 when she crash into a utility pole on Route 1 in South Kingstown. Her passenger, 26-year-old John Balzano, was thrown from the car upon impact. He later died at the hospital.
Police say Lyons was found at the scene of the accident in possession of three different controlled substances: Morphine, Alpazon and Buprenophine.
She was indicted by a grand jury on March 24. A judge set her bail at $5,000 personal recognizance Monday afternoon.
Lyons was also ordered by the judge not to drive and has to go through substance abuse counseling.
She is due back in court on May 27.
