Firefighters make mayday call while fighting 4-alarm fire

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence fire crews spent hours Monday night fighting a four-alarm fire at a triple-decker home on Plymouth Street.

The fire broke out just after 9 p.m. Monday at 55 Plymouth Street.

Fire officials said 15 people were in the building at the time of the fire, but they all managed to escape. Three firefighters were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A person inside the building when the fire broke out was also transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

A mayday was called when the three injured firefighters were trapped inside the building, but the three men managed to escape through windows. The mayday was quickly canceled.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
