NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) – One man has been confirmed dead after flames broke out overnight at a home in North Kingstown.
Fire crews responded to 25 King Street in North Kingstown early Monday morning for a report of an active structure fire.
“Early on in the fire, we had reason to believe there may be someone inside,” said Deputy Fire Chief Scott Kettelle, who was up all night battling the fire.
The fire, which had engulfed the house by the time crews arrived, was first reported at 3:13 a.m. with several 911 calls.
“I just heard a big bang and I woke up, and I looked outside and just saw this huge blaze. It looked like a forest fire,” said neighbor Denise Dorroh.
Once the flames were under control, Kettelle said firefighters were able to find the victim’s body among the rubble. As of Monday afternoon, authorities had not released the man’s name.
Kettelle told Eyewitness News he doesn’t believe the fire is suspicious, but the cause is under investigation.
The house is considered a total loss.
