Trial begins for sex trafficking suspects

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The trial of a Providence couple charged with human trafficking will begin Monday in Maryland.

Amina Philip, 26, and her boyfriend, 29-year-old Gary Eugene Maddox, are accused of kidnapping a 24-year-old woman, driving her to Maryland and forcing her into prostitution in October 2013.

According to the victim, Maddox and Philip befriended her land offered her money to help them sell various items. But instead, the woman claims they drove her out of state and said Maddox told her she would have to have sex with customers for money. They also allegedly threatened to harm or kill her if she didn’t.

The woman also said Philip took photos of her and posted them in ads on the website The victim managed to call police from a Maryland gas station.

Both are charged with multiple human trafficking and prostitution offenses.

Maddox is also charged with kidnapping.
