EXETER, R.I. (AP) – The state Senate is calling for a study that could lead to the establishment of a memorial to veterans of the Gulf Wars at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Sen. Walter Felag’s resolution would create a joint commission with the House to study the feasibility of a memorial to veterans of Desert Storm and Desert Shield at the Exeter cemetery. If approved, the nine-member commission would issue its findings by next March.
The resolution has been sent to the House. The House Veterans’ Affairs Committee passed a companion measure Thursday.
Felag says the cemetery has memorials for World War II, the Korean War and groups including the Veterans of Foreign Wars and ex-prisoners of war. He says those who served more recently should also be honored.
