Suspicious bag at mosque deemed harmless

NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) – Rhode Island State Police were called to a North Smithfield mosque after a man left behind a duffel bag after speaking with staff.

Officials responded to the Masjid Al Islam Temple on Sayles Hill Road just after 7:40 p.m. Thursday.

The bag, which turned out to be harmless, was detonated by a robot. No evacuations were necessary.

Officials said the man who left the bag behind was recently released from the hospital for psychiatric issues.

State police are not treating the incident as a criminal investigation, but say they would like to question the man about the incident.

Capt. Robert Wall believes this is the same mosque that had its sign vandalized about one year ago.
