Vigil held for victim of New Bedford fire

Nearly a week after his body was discovered inside a burning home, friends and family gathered to remember him.

FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (WPRI) — Nearly one week after the body of Justin Downey was found inside a burning home, family and friends attended a vigil at Fairhaven Park to remember him.

The 29 year old’s body was discovered last Tuesday, following a fire on Rounds Street in New Bedford.

“He brought a lot of smiles to a lot of people and I hope he continues to do so”, said Justin’s aunt, Diane.

Officials believe Downey’s death is suspicious, but tonight, only words of encouragement and positivity were written on balloons and in notes to Downey.

Anyone with information about the fire or that saw anything in the area of the fire is urged to contact New Bedford Police at (508) 991-6300 or leave an anonymous tip by calling (508) 961-4584.
