PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A gathering was held in Providence Thursday to promote peace and to honor a teen killed in the city one year ago.
Friends and family of 19-year-old Demetri Todd marched through Roger Williams Park, calling for an end to violence.
Todd was shot while sitting in his car on Harvard Avenue on April 23, 2013.
That wasn’t the only recent tragedy for the family though, as Todd’s 20-year-old cousin, Wesley Smith, was gunned down at the corner of Dudley and Tanner Streets just four weeks prior.

Todd’s mother said every day has been a struggle since she lost her son, and that both acts of violence could have been prevented.
“People need to stand up if they see something that’s wrong. Talk about it. Say something,” said Jalesha Todd.
No arrests have been made in either homicide and both remain under investigation. Police said the two crimes do not appear to be connected.
