Catholics prepare for historic weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Catholics are preparing for a historic weekend as two beloved leaders of the church will be declared saints.

Popes John Paul II and John XXIII will both be canonized at a ceremony Sunday at the Vatican.

Cardinal O’Malley of Boston held a mass in Rome Friday ahead of the dual canonization.

“We’re all grateful for his World Youth Days, and literally thousands of young people from Boston have had the opportunity to see Pope John Paul II personally,” O’Malley said. “No one in the history of humanity has been seen by more people than John Paul II.”

Closer to home, Bishop Thomas Tobin will be celebrating mass at Blessed Pope John Paul II Church on Central Avenue in Pawtucket. We’ve learned he will bless a new statue and prayer cards of the former pope.
