CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – Cranston police say one of their officers shot and injured a man who pointed a gun at police during a vehicle stop.
According to Major Robert Ryan, at about 2 a.m. Saturday, two officers spotted a vehicle on Plainfield Street that they suspected was being driven by a drunk driver. They attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver continued on into Providence.
After a short pursuit, the driver got out of the vehicle and pointed a gun at the two officers. One of them then shot the suspect, who was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of what police said was not a life-threatening injury.
Police have not identified the driver or specified where in Providence the shooting took place, and say that the incident is under investigation by Cranston, Providence and State Police and the Attorney General’s office.
