MANSFIELD, MASS. (WPRI) – A Norton man is under arrest after police say he struck and killed a Raynham man while driving drunk.
Mansfield police report that they responded to Route 140 North at Norfolk Street minutes before midnight for a two-car crash. Police say it appears that 23 year-old Nicholas Salvo or Norton was heading South on Route 140 and speeding when he neared the intersection with Norfolk Street.
A 63 year-old Raynham man was driving North on 140 and attempting to take a left turn onto Norfolk Street when Salvo ran a red light and collided with him.
The Raynham man, whose name is being withheld until family is notified, was freed from the wreck by firefighters but was pronounced dead at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. There were no other passengers in either vehicle.
Salvo was arrested and taken to Rhode Island Hospital, and has since been released back into police custody. He is being charged with motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence, reckless operation, speeding, failure to stop at a red light and a marked lanes violation. He was held at $10,000 bail at the Mansfield Police DEpartment and will be arraigned in Attleboro Monday morning.
