PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Former state senator Patrick McDonald was sentenced to 20 years with 4 1/2 to serve at the ACI for embezzling more than $160,000.
McDonald was convicted in January of stealing the money from his clients during real estate closings through his law firm. Investigators claimed McDonald used the money to pay for expenses such as his own mortgage, dinners, and hotel stays.
The former senator apologized to his victims but never took full responsibility for his crimes. He partially blamed them on the poor oversight of Kimberly Gostomski, his former paralegal and mistress.
McDonald, who is a husband and father of four, made an emotional apology to his family in court on Wednesday, while his wife cried in the last row of the courtroom.
“I owe each one of them a debt that I am not sure that I will ever be able to repay, but I will work every day to make it up to them,” he stated.
He remains on home confinement and has been ordered to surrender to the ACI in June.
