PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Providence County Grand Jury has determined that two city police officers were justified in shooting a suspect during a gunfight in March.

The Grand Jury completed its investigation into the incident and found the actions of police to be lawful and legally justified, according to the Attorney General’s office.

Providence Police Major David Lapatin said three officers happened upon a gun battle between two groups on Canton Street at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, March 22.

Members of both groups began shooting at police upon their arrival, who then started to fire back according to Lapatin.

One person was struck and killed, later identified by police as Douglas Cooper, 18.

Following the incident, Prov. Police Chief Hugh Clements said the officers involved were very experienced and well-trained.
