Friend of marathon suspect expected to testify

BOSTON (AP) — A college friend of the Boston Marathon bombing suspect could take the stand to try to suppress evidence for his upcoming trial.

Dias Kadyrbayev could testify Wednesday.

He and Azamat Tazhayakov are charged with tampering with evidence for removing Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s laptop and a backpack containing fireworks from his dorm room at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth after the April 15, 2013 bombing.

Tazhayakov and Robel Phillipos, who’s charged with lying to investigators, declined to testify.

A federal judge ruled Tuesday the men will have separate trials held in Massachusetts.

Tazhayakov’s trial will be June 30, Kadyrbayev’s on Sept. 8 and Phillipos’ on Sept. 29. All pleaded not guilty.

Tsarnaev pleaded not guilty to 30 federal counts in the attack that killed three and injured more than 260.
