EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Police are searching for suspects after a young Yorkshire Terrier was abandoned last week.
According to animal control officials, the male dog was dropped off in front of the East Providence Control Compound on Commercial Way last Wednesday. Officials say the driver of a blue Volkwagen Beetle stopped at the building and waited until there was no nearby traffic, then let the dog out and drove away.
Officials say the dog was unattended for about 90 minutes until a staffer found him scratching at the door.
If found, the driver will face animal abandonment charges, which would have been an automatic felony charge had the dog died.
The Yorkshire Terrier was not harmed and appears to be in good health.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact East Providence Animal Control.
