Parents, former students shocked by teacher’s arrest

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Many parents picking up their children from Shea High School Thursday weren’t aware one of the teachers there was arrested on child pornography charges, and were stunned when they heard the news.

Rhode Island State Police said George Grimes, 46, of Warwick, was arrested after they received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

“It’s something really, really sad to know about it,” said Jose Semedo, the father of a 9th grader at the school. “We expect children to be protected.”

A 2013 Shea High School graduate told us Grimes was her English teacher, and said the arrest was a complete surprise to her and her friends.

“I would have never thought he would do something like that,” said Rosa Cruz. “He’s not that type of person, and he has kids of his own, so nobody would’ve believed he would’ve been like that.”

The case remains under investigation, and police said they do not believe Grimes had any inappropriate contact with any children.

The Pawtucket School Department has not commented on his arrest.
